Padmasambhava (in Wylie's transcription Padma-´bjung-gnas), literally translated as "Born from the Lotus", better known in the Himalayan regions as Guru Rinpoche ("Great Teacher"), was a Buddhist teacher who, according to tradition, introduced Buddhism to Tibet.
The first biography of Padmasambhava dates back to the 14th century and contains many legendary incidents. Other sources are unknown until that time. Some researchers have thus sometimes questioned his historical identity.
Life According to tradition, he was born in the kingdom of Udyana, an area in present-day Pakistan. He married the daughter of the local king.
He was said to have had the ability to memorize all teachings and texts that were recited even once in his presence. This earned him a reputation as a scholar among Buddhist monks. He later traveled to Tibet, where he founded the Nyingmapa school.
